
In my doctoral research, I investigated the development of genetically modified gene drive mosquitoes for malaria control. The temporal context of the study provides insight into an emerging field of biotechnology and the knowledge production associated with it.
I argue that researchers developing gene drives and gene drive mosquitoes are shaping our understanding of how uncertainty is addressed in science and in biotechnology, and how biotechnological interventions on shared environments are made, assessed, and justified. The study therefore contributes to discussions about biotechnology as part of a society in which interventions into living and embodied environments are increasingly being contested, yet simultaneously marketed as necessary responses to escalating states of crisis.
